Altus Sport and the SSCN

The following is a brief overview of what the SSCN is about and of what Altus’ role is in this network.

You can find more information on the website of the Southern African SSCN at http://sscn-sa.ning.com.

What is the SSCN ?

The Sport for Social Change Network (SSCN) is a meeting point for more than 40 dynamic organizations involved or interested in using sport as a tool to make social change happen. It consists of regional Coordination Hubs that are currently being set up in Brazil, Eastern Africa and Southern Africa with the support of Nike and local partners, with more continents to follow.

The Southern African Hub has set out to reach the following key objectives:

i.       Accelerate the dissemination of successful ideas & programmes

ii.      Support professionalism in all member activities

iii.     Encourage innovation, local ownership & entrepreneurship among members

iv.     Stimulate youth empowerment through sport for social change initiatives with a special emphasis on empowering girls

v.      Create a supportive stakeholder environment for the sport for social change movement in Southern Africa

Reaching these objectives will enable us to be successful on our mission and in reaching our vision:

The Role of Altus-Sport-Vuma in the SSCN

In June 2009 Altus-Sport-Vuma was selected as the Convener of the Southern African Hub of the SSCN by representatives of the local founding SSCN partners, Nike and the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ). Over the next months and years we will thus be coordinating the setup of a Hub Office and the creation of a truly vibrant network spanning 10 countries: Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Support the SSCN Southern Africa

The SSCN provides a variety of opportunities for you to form a valuable partnership with us. We are still open to proposals for founding partners of the Southern African network, but we are equally interested in more focussed financial and in-kind support for specific activities or specific countries. If you believe, like we do, that sport can make the difference between talking about change and making it happen, please contact us.

The current supporters of the Southern African Hub are Nike South Africa and the German Technical Cooperation’s Youth Development Through Football Initiative (GTZ-YDF).
